Thoughts on the general design of this site…

  • This design is inspired by a lifelong fascination with registration marks on printed material. I love the little ink squares and marks on postage stamp proof sheets.
  • There’s always dozens of little invisible things going on in websites that make s/fx run. Most of the marks in this site actually do — or at least refer — to something.
  • It also indulges in some ideas that never get past the brainstorming phase, like “now that we have retina screens, why don’t we ever use half-point lines?” and “instead of fighting the fact that ‘above the fold’ isn’t a real thing on the web, why not actually work with that?”
  • I like design that is playful and experimental and occasionally a little dumb.
  • “I can’t see that. I don’t get it.” You don’t have to!
  • Perfection is a loser’s game. Kintsugi > blue willow china. I’d rather live in a world that looked like the Millennium Falcon than an Apple Store.
  • “Limitations are possibilities.” “One must understand the rules in order to break them.” Clichés! Not wrong!
